IML Labels and Systems recently visited British Steel’s Scunthorpe site to fully understand how the current identification labels are utilised in the mills.
The UK’s Steel Industry is recovering after a number of years of doubt over its future. In 2016, the problems worsened but did not dampen the spirits of steel workers who were determined to see through this tough time. Employees united and the whole industry showed its strength through selfless actions of workers, including wage and pension cuts. These united fronts have not diminished now that the industry is on the up and this can be seen at several manufacturing sites across the UK, and we saw it first hand at the Scunthorpe British Steel site.
With a strong, long established relationship, IML and British Steel have been working on a number of projects to help improve efficiencies and reduce wastage and misidentification of stock across several mill sites.
The recent visit to the Scunthorpe site was undertaken by Charlotte Pinchin (IML Account Manager), Magdy Habib (IML Middle East Sales Manager) and Neil Dunn (IML Sales Director). Meeting Andrew Plumtree from British Steel at the site gave an important insight and behind-the-scenes knowledge for the team. IML enjoy getting involved with the mills on a personal basis and increasing employee knowledge is one of the core values we hold as a company.
With the Rod Mill looking to increase the gauge of rod being manufactured, IML have to consider the additional heat created at the point of product identification. The cost of re-labelling or losing coil is a significant problem within industry. This is a cost that both British Steel and IML are working together on to find a suitable solution.
Other projects the prestigious company are working on in the Bloom and Billet Mill, Scunthorpe and up in Hartlepool are also aimed at making cost saving and improvements to efficiency when identifying the steel products in the first stages of manufacture.
